Thanks for your interest in working on our team! Job Title: AHL Off-Ice Official Pay Details: The starting hourly rate for this position is $19.00 per hour. Summary of Position The primary responsibility of an Off-Ice Official is to function as a contributing member of a team of officials assigned to a variety of tasks for pre-season, regular season and playoff games played in the American Hockey League (AHL). Responsibilities Timing the game from stoppage to stoppage Resetting the clock when necessary Monitoring that the clock is functioning properly Timing of intermissions Timing of both official and commercial time-outs Timing of all penalties assessed by the Referees Ensure that penalties are recorded accurately in the NHL records Ensure players are released at the appropriate times from the penalty box Assist the Referees with determining the on-ice strength when multiple penalties are assessed Manage the penalty box area in conjunction with the Penalty Timekeeper Release players at the appropriate time at the expiration of their penalties Replace game pucks when they leave the ice surface and/or at other times per league guidelines Maintain a backup stop watch for the game clock Monitor the video replay headset in case there are video reviews required and/or game clock adjustments Manage the commercial time-outs based on established League guidelines Communicate with the broadcasters, the On-Ice Officials, and fellow Off-Ice Officials when commercial time-outs are upcoming and when they are about to be completed Illuminate the red light when the Referee signals that a goal has been scored Make the official decision on all goals, including the goal scorer and those worthy of receiving an assist Report this information to Off-Ice Official responsible for entering information into the scoring system and to the Public Address Announcer Review all scoring plays on video to ensure accuracy Accurately interpret the events of the game and record them in the League scoring system Make instantaneous decisions on hits, shots, missed shots, blocked shots, giveaways, takeaways, goals and assists, penalties and other pertinent game events Verbalize events so that nothing is missed by those entering them into the scoring system computers Review events on video to verify decisions or to make changes for accuracy Review all close plays at the net and communicating effectively with the technician, the On-Ice Officials, and the NHL Situation Room to accurately determine the legitimacy of all goals and potential goals Must be available one-two hours prior to game time and until the game reports are completed and must be available for all pre-season, regular and post-season games (October to June) Other duties as assigned Skills Significant knowledge of hockey, preferably as an On-Ice or Off-Ice Official, as a player or as a coach, either at the Professional, Major Junior, College or Minor Professional level College degree preferred or equivalent experience significant understanding of scoring systems used in professional sports leagues Excellent understanding of the playing rules, bylaws and scoring pertinent to the AHL, including current understanding of AHL scoring and statistics Strong computer skills, including but not limited to MS WORD, EXCEL Able to read, interpret and understand AHL playing rules, bulletins, policies and procedures as distributed by the AHL Able to operate video review equipment, communication equipment and other technology introduced by the league to effectively officiate the game Able to work effectively within a high pressure, time sensitive environment with extreme focus and concentration Strong organizational and time management skills Strong communication skills, both written and verbally able to work effectively in a team environment Able to demonstrate a calm demeanor, discretion and professionalism in potentially emotional situations Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays when required Must be available to work all Gulls home games (pre-season, regular and post-season) Knowledge, Skills and Experience Education - Bachelor's Degree Experience Required - 1-2 Year's The San Diego Gulls took the ice on October 10, 2015 opening their inaugural American Hockey League (AHL) season in San Diego, California.
