Department BSD MED - Emergency Medicine - Sharp Research Staff About the Department In existence for over thirty years, the Section of Emergency Medicine is comprised of 27 fulltime and 14 part-time faculty members, as well as an outstanding staff of research, administrative and clinical personnel who are devoted to the mission of excellence in patient care, education and research. The Emergency Medicine faculty cover and maintain the staffing and operation of the adult emergency department (ED) at The University of Chicago Medicine. In December 2017, the Section began treating patients in its new, state-of-the art adult ED. Job Summary The Sharp Lab is looking for a Staff Scientist to perform as well as train other scientists in animal surgeries for a variety of experimental work. Current work is focused on understanding the mechanisms of injury following systemic ischemia/reperfusion injury following cardiac arrest and other oxygen deprivation states such as opioid overdose. Anesthetization, endotracheal intubation, intrathoracic surgery, jugular vein cannulization, arterial line insertion skills and experience will be essential. Small animal echocardiography skills are also required. Working in a team environment is a must. The Staff Scientist is expected to plan, execute, facilitate and advanced technical/scientific research projects. Designs, develops and tests experimental protocols for animal research (including empirical protocols, computational, statistical methods, etc.),. Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-authors scientific research manuscripts. Will be responsible for supervising other research staff. May present work at scientific meetings and provide peer review of grant applications and scientific manuscripts. Must have knowledge of small animal anesthesia, husbandry ,and record keeping. Responsibilities Designs, develops and tests experimental surgical protocols for research. Collaborates with other researchers as appropriate. Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-authors scientific research manuscripts. Training of post-doctoral fellows, lab assistants, and students in surgical procedures is required. Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information. Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage, analyze and make recommendations on complex data sets for research. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field. Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Experience: Experience in developing and implementing research projects. Experience with the analysis of physiological data. Experience with assisting in the training, a strong publication record, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research. Supervisory experience. Preferred Competencies Knowledge in small (mouse, rat) and large animal (pig) surgeries. Knowledge of regulatory policies and procedures. Analytical skills. Problem-solving skills.
