Full Job Description

The Sterile Processing Educator is responsible for developing, implementing, and delivering educational programs and training materials. Ensures the sterile processing department staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively and safely in compliance with accreditation organizations requirements as well as medical center policies and procedures for SPD and related staff. Facilitates training of SPD staff through educational programs and job specific instruction. Improves SPD processes by facilitating the application for new technology of reusable medical devices by training all new and existing staff. Develops, monitors, and revises SPD educational programs for both new and existing staff. Documents and assesses staff's training, to identify areas of strength and need. Develops an education plan (literature review, continuing education, in-services, certification and/or formal education) to maintain and improve knowledge in specialized areas of processing reusable medical devices. Participates in tracking, trending and analyzing education data. Identifies opportunities for improvement, makes recommendations and/or prepares reports based on findings. Develops and conducts the annual review of the SPD preceptor program. The Sterile Processing Educator will be required to travel to various work locations consulting with ambulatory clinics to help educate clinical management and techs with processing procedures. Essential Duties: Provides initial orientation and a continuing on the job training for new and established SPD employees. Develops, monitors, and revises SPD education programs for transportation, decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization/disinfection, distribution, and storage of reusable medical equipment for the medical center. Develops and provides training to employees to fully comply with provisions of safety regulations and infection control procedures and principles. Identifies the training needs of SPD employees, develops training plans, and arrange training to meet the needs of employees. Creates learning plans that meet the needs of individual and specific groups. Evaluates and documents results of learning activities. Participates in tracking and trending educational data. Evaluates employee competency on proper procedures and methods based on department and hospital polices. Evaluates the employee compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). This includes posting and maintaining current documents of SOP, Competencies and Instructions for Use (IFU) documents on a regular basis. Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and quality improvement initiatives to contribute expertise and insights into sterile processing education. Develops, monitors, and revises SPD educational programs for both new and existing employees. He/she is expected to display understanding of governing regulations, such as hospital/departmental policies. Title XXII and Joint Commission requirements. Creates a positive environment conducive to learning and development. Act as the subject matter expect to provide clinical staff education as it relates to SPD. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: Req H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Req Specialized/technical training Graduate of a state approved accredited school of Sterile Processing Services. A minimum of 4 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Tech Supervisor or Scope Tech Supervisor in lieu of graduate of State Approved Accredited Sterile Processing Services. Req 5 years Five years Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing experience. Req Knowledge of AANSI/AAMI Standards Preferred Qualifications: Pref 7 years Seven years Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing experience. Required Licenses/Certifications: Req Certified Registered Central Service Technician - CRCST (IAHCSMM) Current Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (HSPA, CBSPD). If no certification upon hire, one must be obtained within one year. Pref Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only) The annual base salary range for this position is $81,120.00 - $133,010.00.
