Job Description A full-time research technologist 2 position (RT2) is available in the Gornalusse lab in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington (https://obgyn.uw.edu/research). This position will be located at the South Lake Union campus of UW Medicine, a continually expanding biomedical and clinical research hub. The research technologist will work in support of two primary studies: (1) dissecting the molecular pathways in the human gastrointestinal tract and blood that lead to HIV reservoir persistence and/or HIV reactivation, and (2) understanding the role of specific genes (i.e. CD101 and AXL) in the onset of mucosal inflammation and HIV acquisition. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The technologist will work closely with the PI and a Ph.D. Research Scientist in a highly collaborative environment. The technologist will work primarily at the bench on tasks such as clinical specimen processing, nucleic acid extractions, preparation of single-cell suspensions, tissue and cell culture, digital PCR gene expression assays, and functional immunology assays. The technologist will interpret results, perform simple statistical tests, review current literature, and optimize experimental protocols. The technologist will also perform some administrative tasks such coordinating sample transport, managing sample databases (including records of clinical biospecimens), managing projects of moderate size and scope, mentoring undergraduates, and ordering supplies. The candidate should be enthusiastic, detail-oriented, reliable, highly organized, and accountable, with strong technical and communication skills. After a reasonable period of training, they are expected to independently plan and execute experiments and to present research findings in laboratory meetings. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelors in science (B.S.) degree in biology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology or a closely related field PLUS one year of research experience equivalent to Research Technologist I or one year of full-time post-baccalaureate experience in a biomedical research lab. Professional level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree. Training or experience within a specific discipline will be required to meet the unique requirements of individual positions. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. Desired skills Experience in processing human samples, cell culture, nucleic acid extraction and qPCR, computing with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and experience documenting daily work in laboratory notebooks is desired.
