The Mechanic I/II is responsible for performing journey level maintenance and repair of county automotive and heavy equipment; troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs equipment malfunctions; provide preventative maintenance services; fabricates and repairs wearing and operating parts and monitors equipment to ensure it is in safe working order. Performs preventive maintenance activities for County automotive vehicles and heavy equipment. 2. Performs maintenance and repairs on automotive vehicles and heavy equipment; replaces air, hydraulic and anti-lock brakes; repairs transmissions; works on electrical systems; repairs heating and cooling systems; and repairs engines. 3. Diagnoses and troubleshoots vehicle and heavy equipment problems in the shop and in the field. Operates or transports equipment back to shop for repair. 4. Designs and fabricates equipment parts not readily available including welding fatigued or failed components, converting equipment to meet seasonal needs and adding modifications to existing equipment. 5. Provides technical advice to others working in the shop and monitors shop equipment to ensure that the equipment is in safe working order. 6. Other duties required. Education & Experience: Mechanic I: High School or (G.E.D.) AND Additional five (5) years of automotive and/or heavy equipment maintenance and repair or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Mechanic II: High School or (G.E.D.) AND additional six (6) years automotive and heavy equipment maintenance experience OR six (6) years experience in welding, metal design and fabrication, automotive repair and heavy equipment maintenance OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Required: Mechanic I: Valid State of Washington Driver's License and proof of insurance, if requested.
