Agency Adult Correction Division COO - OPS - Institutions Operations Job Classification Title Correctional Sergeant III (S) Position Number 60060605 Grade NC09 About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work Salary Range: $41,206.00 - $72,113.00 Foothills Correctional Institution is located in Morganton NC Burke County and is a close custody male facility. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer IIIs in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Employees at this level supervise more staff than recognized in the lower-level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences ***This is an Anticipated Vacancy. This position is expected to be available on 04/06/2026. ** Management Preferences: Thorough knowledge of the overall operation of Correctional facilities. Thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of offenders. ***Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job. *** ***This is an INTERNAL POSTING open ONLY for current employees of the NC Department of Adult Correction. *** This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
