This is a repost, previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This is an Engineering Assistant position for Smithfield Construction Office. Performs technical duties and fieldwork related to the inspection, maintenance, and operation of state-maintained roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure. Work involves assisting higher-level technicians, engineers, and supervisors in a variety of highway maintenance and construction activities. Performs basic technical inspection work and basic surveying to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and standards for highway and bridge construction projects administered by the NCDOT. Work involves on-site inspection, documentation, material testing, and quantity measurements of construction activities to ensure workmanship, materials, and methods comply with state and federal requirements. Ability to read, interpret and explain such things as construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures. Ability to take notes. Ability to learn computer software such as GIS, Outlook, and Excel. Good communicative skills and attention to detail needed. The employee must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds, work in high traffic areas, at heights over water or traffic, extreme temperatures, uneven terrain, and during nights and weekends if necessary. Safety toe shoes are required. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range NC04 $32,287- $56,502 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry Knowledge and understanding of basic math concepts, principles and practices Knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts, practices, and theories used in the technical specialty area with limited supervision Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience.
