Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbotts diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people. The Principal Data Architect will sit at our Irving, TX location and is part of our Core Diagnostics group. They will develop, construct, test, and maintain data architectures such as databases and large-scale processing systems, where the focus is on infrastructure and data flow management. They are responsible for building & maintaining data pipelines (ETL processes; ensuring data quality & reliability; designing and managing data warehouses and databases; and integrating data from various sources.). They create the systems and structures that allow data to be collected, stored, & processed efficiently. Core Job Responsibilities Define overarching data strategy and architecture for large-scale data systems that support current and future business needs. Provide expert technical leadership to data engineering teams and stakeholders, promoting a culture of innovation and technical excellence. Partner with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into actionable technical objectives. Collaborate with IT and business leadership to ensure data initiatives align with organizational goals and priorities. Lead cross-functional teams in developing and implementing data governance frameworks that ensure data integrity, security, and compliance. Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies, advising on their potential adoption to enhance data capabilities. Conceptualize, design, and lead high-value, data-driven projects that address strategic business needs. Present complex technical findings in clear, concise language for senior leadership and non-technical audiences. Scope, plan, resource, and manage data and software projects of varying complexity to successful completion. Responsible for effectively communicating to senior management on data strategy and project progress Proactively identify and drive operational, process, and system-level improvements using data to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Evaluate issues from multiple perspectives, rigorously validating information and questioning assumptions to support sound decision-making. Play a key role in talent development by mentoring team members and contributing to the hiring and evaluation of new data engineers. Supervisory / Management Responsibilities Serve as an influential leader in data engineering, helping shape the strategic direction of the organizations data function. Lead highly complex initiatives across departments and technical domains. Foster a collaborative, results-driven environment across cross-functional teams. Mentor less-experienced team members and contribute significantly to developing team capabilities. Lead the design and implementation of departmental and site-level processes and procedures. Build and maintain strong partnerships with other departments and functional teams. Provide strategic guidance to senior executives and contribute to long-term organizational planning. Position Accountability / Scope Lead and execute multiple complex projects simultaneously from planning through delivery. Work with stakeholders to define business questions, requirements, timelines, objectives, and success criteria, while challenging low-value ideas to optimize outcomes. Apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques such as regression, clustering, decision trees, time-series forecasting, simulation, optimization, scenario analysis, exploratory data analysis, unstructured data analysis, and neural networks. Track emerging analytics trends, best practices, and technologies; research and propose new tools, methods, and processes. Maintain deep knowledge of both commercial and open-source analytics platforms, understanding their advantages, constraints, and appropriate applications. Leverage strong knowledge of organizational data assets to guide strategic and highly technical initiatives. Demonstrate expertise in big data ecosystems, cloud storage, distributed systems, and related software tools. Utilize advanced programming skills to design scalable, high-performance data systems. Apply subject matter expertise to efficiently select and evaluate data required for problem-solving. Contribute significantly to the departments human resource development and long-term technical strategy. Define data architecture strategy, set technical standards, and help shape enterprise-wide data practices. Education and Experience Bachelors Degree required in Engineering, Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology or closely related field. Advanced Degree a plus Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience. Deep expertise in data modeling, optimization, cloud technologies, unstructured data analysis, and/or neural networks. Experience or training in Databricks and Microsoft Azure is a plus. Experience with large-scale data systems such as Hadoop, Spark, MongoDB, or similar platforms. Advanced programming experience in SQL, R, Python, Java, Scala, C++, and Linux/Unix scripting. Strong business acumen and experience with operational or strategic systems. Strong understanding of data governance and data security principles. Experience or education in life sciences or healthcare is preferred.
