Two Research Engineers are being sought to join the Tearney Lab to work on novel imaging devices and systems for both benchtop and clinical translation research. The Tearney Lab specializes in research device development and clinical studies both at Mass General Hospital and other affiliated sites. The candidate will be joining an Engineering Team with diverse experience in biomedical device design and safety testing with specializations in Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Optical, and Firmware engineering. The candidate will support the development and deployment of both imaging probes and imaging systems for use in fundamental research and clinical studies. The candidate will prototype, fabricate, validate, document, and assist in utilization and maintenance of devices tested at the lab. Highly desired qualities in the candidate include creativity, attention to detail, rapid prototyping experience, and experience with biomedical optics including fiber optics. The candidate will participate on multiple projects with colleagues of various backgrounds including PhD researchers, other engineers, technicians, clinicians, nurses, and research coordinators, so strong communication skills are also desired. The first candidate will be designing novel colonoscopy devices that increase the imaging capabilities of clinicians. Soft polymer experience and mechanical backgrounds are preferred. The second candidate will be developing ocular devices for clinical use with a collaborator. Optical simulation and assembly as well as mechanical design experiences are preferred. Job Summary Will support the development of systems and probes being developed for research and clinical applications through all development phases, including design, prototyping, fabrication, validation, utilization, and maintenance. Highly desired qualities are creativity, attention to detail, and experience with biomedical optics. Will participate on multiple projects, and assist in the design and fabrication of , mechanical, and electronic components in new devices, reviewing and documenting the manufacturing process for in-production devices, and troubleshooting the performance of existing systems. Does this position require Patient Care? No Essential Functions -Design new, mechanical, and electronic components and systems using industry standard design control processes. -Develop complex mechanical systems. -Design, fabricate, and validate mechanical enclosures, mounts, and subassemblies. -Design and implement vibration, thermal, and environmental testing methods. -Produce prototypes of new optical, mechanical, and electronic components and systems. -Document new and existing parts and procedures to facilitate manufacturing. -Validate the conformance of components and systems to specifications. -Troubleshoot and take corrective action for components and systems not meeting specifications. Qualifications Education Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Experience Experience in device engineering in a hospital, industry, or academic 1-2 years preferred and Experience in medical engineering 0-1 year preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Skill in management of engineering projects and/or personnel. - Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of scientist, engineers and medical doctors. - Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate complexity. - Computer literacy to the level of at least word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, statistics, engineering tools and programming. - Skill in technical writing. - Experience using fabrication tools.
