PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 6-month probation. CLASS DESCRIPTION: A Recreation Center Director II plans, coordinates and directs a recreation program in a one story, multi-room center having a gym and multi-purpose room, satellite center and/or a pool. Work of this class involves supervising full-time and part-time recreation leaders and aides. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional work week which includes evening and weekend hours. Work is performed in a recreation center where unpleasant working conditions are rarely encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion. SELECTION PROCESS Only classified City employees who indicate the minimum qualifications on their applications and have successfully completed a probationary period on or before the day of filing an application are eligible to compete in this examination. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS On or before the date of filing the application, classified employees must: EDUCATION: Have a bachelors degree in recreation, physical education, recreation administration, communication, leisure services or a related field from an accredited college or university. AND EXPERIENCE: Have four years experience managing a recreation facility or program. OR EQUIVALENCIES: Six months of additional experience in leading recreational activities may be substituted for each year of the high school requirement or have an equivalent combination of education and experience. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Must hold or be able to acquire within one year of hire and maintain a Certified Pool Operator certification and First Aid/CPR. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation program development. Knowledge of the rules and regulations of a wide variety of sports, games and recreational activities. Knowledge of the use and care of recreational equipment. Ability to plan, organize, direct and evaluate a recreational program. Ability to lead a variety of recreational activities. Supervisory ability. Ability to establish a satisfactory relationship with the community. Ability to work effectively with large groups of people. Ability to maintain discipline and order. Ability to maintain records and write reports. EXAMINATION PROCESS Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment.
