Job Title: Research Assistant Department: Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences Supervisor: Scot McIntosh Starting Rate of Pay: $9.00/hr Length of Time: Eligible for rehire on a semester basis. Department Description The Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences is committed to the education, training and lifelong learning opportunities for pharmacy students as well as pharmacists, scientists and educators that enhance the lives within our community, nation and world. The Department is dedicated to the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge gained through state of the art biomedical and pharmaceutical research that enhances understanding of disease processes and leads to the development and refinement of therapies to enhance the quality of life through improved healthcare. Job Description The department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy is currently recruiting for a student laboratory research assistant. The applicant is responsible for performing general care and maintenance of laboratory animals, equipment, facilities and supporting research efforts in accordance with standard operating procedures. Essential laboratory functions include but are limited to the following: Complete all necessary training modules and health screenings for working with laboratory animals Feed, water and dispense bedding for all animals on a scheduled basis Evaluate animals general health, report abnormalities to lab staff and/or veterinarian for evaluation. Perform preventative animal health care duties and administer treatments as prescribed. Assist with maintaining sanitary animal housing, experimental equipment and facility. Maintain and record animal care and animal room information (e.g. temperature and humidity) Provide investigator support and assist with behavioral experiments as requested by the researcher or lab manager. Learn and participate in surgical procedures and apply behavioral assays regularly in the lab. Accurate and thorough documentation and recordkeeping. Collect, maintain, and interpret behavioral data. Management of surgical and behavioral supplies Perform other duties as assigned. Job Location/ Hours Required The candidate will perform all job duties in Congdon Hall for the Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences under the supervision of Scot McIntosh (lab manager) in support of Dr. Scott E. Hembys research efforts. Hours may vary depending on the job requirements. This position requires a minimum of 8 hours per week. Some weekend work may be required.
