Job Description UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic 2. About this opportunity Under the direction of the supervisor and lead, this position will perform journey-level construction work in one or more trade disciplines. Work involves assisting in multi-trade shop work to back up trades staffing as well as focusing on a specific shop trade where the position is assigned. The role requires a good working knowledge of multiple related skill fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, sheet metal and/or sign shop. The position works at the direction of a specific shop lead and is tasked by that lead to assist with other trades as needed. Must be able to perform alterations/construction work with an understanding of code compliance, ADA requirements, and safely operate equipment and use trade specific tools. This position operates as a general construction type position, able to assist trade specific journeymen or perform basic construction and alterations tasks in a semi-skilled capacity. Work Schedule Full time, Monday through Friday, 6:55am 3:25pm This position is based at the University of Washington Tower and is not eligible for telework. Key Responsibilities 100% General Building Maintenance: General demolition work with understanding of all hazardous materials mitigation techniques. General carpentry work such as installing framing, wall board, concrete forms, doors and windows. May assist, coordinate and/or work with other trades and journey level personnel. Replace/install/retrofit lighting ballasts and lamps. Outside/light grounds maintenance: Graffiti Removal - operate pressure washer and apply paint as needed Operate equipment related to irrigation, snow removal, de-icing applications, sweeping Operate blowers, mowers, trimmers, edgers. Courtyard sweeping, clearing, trash removal Backflow Preventor regulatory PM certification (UW Provided) Equipment Operations: Clean equipment and shops, organize storage areas, assist with maintenance of construction shops equipment such as fume hoods, filters, strainers, drains, catch basins, and maintainable shop assets. Operate machinery such as fork-lifts and scissor-lifts. Load and unload materials and supplies. Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites. Building Operations: Assist in move-in/move-out; conference and meeting staging and support Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community. Required Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. Minimum Qualifications Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-journey status in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required. Additional Qualifications Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team. Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations. Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products Workplace Conditions May be required to accept variable work shift. Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions. Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required. Approved footwear must be provided at the employees expense and worn on the job. Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job. Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Possession of a valid Washington State drivers license.
