About the Opportunity: The Center for Drug Discovery (CDD) at Northeastern University invites applications for two postdoctoral research positions in the area of medications development for substance use disorder. The positions are available immediately and both are expected to be filled by early 2023. Funding for the positions is provided mainly via the NIDA T32 National Research Service Award (NSRA) Institutional Research Training Grant Training Program, Development of Medications for Substance Use Disorder, awarded to the CDD 2022-2027. Accordingly, trainees must be a US citizen, a noncitizen national of the US, or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment. The CDD was founded in 2003 by Alexandros Makriyannis, who is the Director and Behrakis Chair in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Northeastern University. The mission of the CDD is to engage in drug discovery and development that will lead to new medications to satisfy a variety of unmet medical needs, particularly involving substance use disorder and other brain diseases, and infectious diseases. The NIDA T32 Training Program on Medications Development for Substance Use Disorder is a collaboration between CDD training faculty based in the Departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University in Boston, MA (Drs. Raymond Booth, Diomedes Logothetis, Alexandros Makriyannis, Leigh Plant, Hideaki Yano), the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital in nearby Belmont, MA (Drs. Jack Bergman, Raj Desai, Stephen Kohut, and Carol Paronis), and the Department of Neuroscience at Tufts University and Medical Center in nearby Medford, MA (Dr. Klaus Miczek). Postdoctoral researchers may align with a single or multiple CDD training faculty members among the three participating institutions (Northeastern, McLean, Tufts). Responsibilities: The potential hires are expected to participate in and help develop vigorous research programs, with the common objective of medications development for substance use disorder. Postdoctoral researchers are expected to help mentor graduate students and junior postdocs. Qualified candidates must have excellence in, or a demonstrated commitment to working in an environment where everyone can excel, and educational environment. Qualifications: Ideal candidates will have recently obtained a recent PhD, MD, or equivalent with a relevant background, e.g., Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, and related fields. Candidates with a successful publication and/or funding history will be given priority. Please also describe any research you have undertaken with students, with the external community, and/or with individuals from marginalized groups. Finally, please outline the research directions you foresee pursuing in the CDD, any cross-disciplinary and collaborative aspects, and the strategies you will take to address each direction.
