The Library for Arts and Culture (LAC) is the newest location within BPLs system, and its specialization caters to Adult Collections and Programs. Located in the L10 building in the Downtown Brooklyn Arts District, LAC is a tenant of L10 with BAM, MoCADA and 651 Arts. From this central location, LAC staff will work with BPL Presents---the librarys performance and exhibition department-- to produce arts and culture programs that are culturally, academically and socially engaging. BPL Presents programs will include author talks, artist workshops, music performances, and installations. LAC staff-led programs will include professional development artist workshops, networking events, resource and research support, outreach and hosting tours/class visits. The Part Time Library Services Assistant will work with LAC staff in the daily running of the location, providing support in the circulation and displays of the collection, the organization of shelves and materials, program coordination, grant writing research, social media content creation, and help with outreach for community partners and at BPL branches. The Part Time Library Services Assistant will assist LAC staff with day-to-day library operations including customer service, circulation and maintenance. This position reports to the Library Manager. The hours for this position are 10-12 hours a week and the hourly rate is ($20-$23) an hour. Availability for some nights and weekends preferred. Responsibilities Maintains orderly shelves and displays of books, vinyl, and ephemera when applicable. Primarily using the Dewey Decimal System (alpha & numeric organization system) Helps with outreach within the downtown Brooklyn arts district and also at BPL branches Performs routine clerical duties including filing & telephone reception Assists branch staff with programs and activities for adults May assist with circulation duties Helps identify grant deadlines and assists LAC staff with grant research Frameworks a social media strategy, posting schedule and creates content with LAC staff Assists in delivering customer service to patrons Provide reference information and readers advisory to patrons utilizing print and electronic resources Demonstrated respect and sensitivity toward diverse cultures represented in Brooklyn Working knowledge of the librarys electronic reference resources including the Internet and Microsoft Office Applications Other duties as assigned Qualifications High School diploma required; BA preferred. Those in pursuit of a tertiary degree in the Arts, Cultural Studies, Art History, Library Science or practicing artists are also encouraged to apply. A demonstrated interest in the Arts, Cultural Studies, and/or Art History. Able to work up to 12 hours per week Willing to work evenings and/or weekends Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to take direction, work independently as well as in a team environment Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal & external customers Proficient technology skills including familiarity with the internet, social media and basic computer applications. General experience working with the public and diverse communities; Outreach skills a plus Bilingual skills highly desirable Detail oriented Physical Demands Lifting materials (shelving, moving, etc.) Standing for long periods Bending, Stooping, or crouching Public service within the community (ex. outreach, school visits, fairs, etc.) We seek professionals dedicated to providing excellent customer service, developing fruitful partnerships in the community, and implementing programs aligned with our mission and vision.
