QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience or training in the installation and/or maintenance of heating, ventilating, or air conditioning systems. FUNCTION OF WORK: To provide skilled installation, maintenance, and repair on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration units in large office buildings, hospitals, and multi-building complexes. LEVEL OF WORK: Experienced SUPERVISION RECEIVED: General from a HVAC/Refrigeration Foreman or maintenance supervisor of higher grade. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None. JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from Trades Apprentice by presence of journeyman level duties. Differs from HVAC/Refrigeration Master Mechanic by lack of responsibility for major overhaul and modification of complex large tonnage, high horsepower centrifugal chillers, and other advanced HVAC/Refrigeration systems. EXAMPLES OF WORK: EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED. Repairs and maintains heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment in buildings or complexes requiring total HVAC capacity of 20 tons or more. Performs preventive maintenance duties on motors: adding coolant, adjusting controls, changing filters, etc. Recharges air conditioning systems with proper amount of lubricant or refrigerant. Overhauls and repairs pumps, motors, control systems, piping, and other equipment used in refrigerating and air conditioning systems. Reports temperatures produced by machines and makes necessary adjustments to produce desired temperatures. Installs, replaces, adjusts, and calibrates major components of refrigeration units: compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies. Maintains records, log sheets, inventory, etc. Services equipment with lubricants and chemicals.
