The Opportunity The role of Scientist 2 executes and conducts, research, development, or scientific/ technical activities in the fields of Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry. Designs, tests, analyzes, optimizes, characterizes, troubleshoots and validates ultra-rapid multiplexed PCR assays for use in decentralized settings, including integration with upstream sample preparation technologies. May facilitate, develop or recommend improvements and/or new procedures related to products or processes. Provides technical review, direction and feedback to others and may lead small to medium projects. Independently develops data presentations for use within organization. What You'll Work On Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement involving nucleic acid extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with no or limited assistance. Designs and executes experiments, performs analyses and implements follow-up actions, to accomplish established milestones . Conducts complex experiments and recommends options for other project approaches or experiments for PCR assay development. Analyzes and evaluates data from multiple disciplines, considering various factors. Possesses and applies knowledge of principles, practices and procedures and can drive projects to completion with minimal oversight. With minimal oversight, recognizes and resolves basic to intermediate technical problems related to qPCR, RT-PCR, dPCR, rapid PCR, multiplexing PCR, nested PCR. Cross-functional team member participates in project planning and updates; executes project plan with oversight from leaders; participates in defining project goals; develops timelines; comprehends resource requirements. Participates in project planning for moderately complex projects with oversight from leaders; Participates in defining project goals; develops simple timelines; begins to comprehend resource requirements. Presents scientific observations to management level within Abbott. Participates in routine maintenance and lab safety. Appropriately documents experimental results and procedures independently, including verification and validation reports according to established guidelines. Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system. Does not have any direct reports but may coach research associates and assist in problem solving. Required Qualifications B.S with minimum of 4 yrs. experience or M.S. w/ minimum 2 yrs experience. Working knowledge of experimental approaches/protocols and scientific methods such as designing experiments and interpreting data, with increasing knowledge complexity with experience. Awareness of regulations and standards affecting IVDs and Biologics Basic computer skills - able to learn new computer programs Preferred Qualifications Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field Ph.D. with 2+ years of relevant industry experience, or Masters degree with 6+ years of relevant industry experience or Bachelors degree with 10+ years industry experience. Minimum of 5 years of experience developing rapid, multiplexed PCR assays. Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices and procedures related to molecular amplification technologies, including PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, dPCR, rapid PCR, multiplexing PCR, and nested PCR, including evaluation, analysis and interpretation of data.
