Full Job Description

Maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, and operates air handling systems, package air conditioning, heating units, fan coil units, heat pumps, chillers, exhaust fans, heat exchangers, and HVAC related pumps and cooling towers, as well as clinical, laboratory, research and food storage refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, and environmental control rooms and similar equipment. Maintains building HVAC electronic and pneumatic control systems, control air compressors and thermostat controls. Uses hand and power tools to repair and/or fabricate items by sketches, diagrams or manufacture specification to restore equipment to operation. Job Responsibilities: Maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, calibrates, validates, certifies, tests, and operates domestic and industrial year-round air conditioning and heating units , as well as clinical, laboratory, research and food storage refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, and environmental control rooms and similar equipment. Maintains internal electrical circuitry. Replenishes lubricants and refrigerants. Connects vacuums and pressure gauges, electromechanical controls and other accessories. Performs installation and setup of refrigeration equipment. Maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, and operates air handling systems, package air conditioning, heating units, fan coil units, heat pumps, chillers, exhaust fans, control air compressors, and HVAC related pumps and cooling towers. Maintains building air handling units, package air conditioners, and exhaust systems. Maintains HVAC electronic and pneumatic control systems (valves, positioners, thermostats, dampers, actuators, lab hood systems, etc.) Performs troubleshooting and repairs to electrical control circuits. Replaces filters in air conditioning equipment, and air cleaning units. Performs cleaning of all HVAC equipment heating, cooling, evaporator, and condenser coils. Performs air flow testing and makes necessary corrections to return air systems to design conditions. Maintains heat exchangers and associated equipment for building heating water systems. Performs installation and setup of HVAC and/or refrigeration equipment. Provides assistance and direction for project helpers and coordinates and assigns specific job duties. Ensures quality, quantity, and thoroughness of helper assigned duties. Interprets and clarifies work order request for all types of HVAC or Refrigeration duties. Evaluates to ensure requests do not violate regulatory codes. Responds to requests and provides a time frame of completion and a cost estimate. Orders material according to specifications. Interprets blueprints and sketches to determine specific materials list. Evaluates inventory and re-orders for necessary materials to maintain minimum stock. Assists staff with related work requests to accurately determine specific needs. Draws rough sketches to ensure clear understanding of requests. Measures items or areas in order to fabricate or submit measurements to vendors for cost estimates. Uses hand and power tools to repair and fabricate necessary requests. Uses job related equipment to perform duties by specification. Troubleshoots A/C related equipment to determine problems and necessary repair. Installs A/C Refrigeration related equipment submitted by vendors or purchased by owners. Ensures equipment meets designed specification. Assembles and installs equipment as specified by manufacturer. Removes and replaces compressors, condensing units, water pumps, fans and other system components. Performs Preventive Maintenance (P.M.). Evaluates (P.M.) procedures to determine specific needs and completes as directed. Implements recommended procedures if approved and makes recommendations of any changes needed. Adds and subtracts equipment from (P.M.) schedules as required for accurate inventory list. Performs other related duties as assigned, or directed, in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution. Maintains regular and predictable attendance. Minimum Education and/or Training: High School Diploma or GED required Minimum Experience: Four (4) years of HVAC mechanic experience required Experience in a hospital or similar environment preferred Experience maintaining ultra low freezers preferred Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by Law: (LC: EPA-RECOV) EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification (EPA-RECOV) required. Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only: (LC: STEAM-1st and REFRIG-1st) First Class Steam (STEAM-1st) and First Class Refrigeration (REFRIG-1st) licenses frm the Memphis and Shelby County Office of Construction Code Enforcement must be obtained within two (2) years of assuming the position.
