WHAT YOULL DO Perform analytical testing for in-process and finished product for vitamin analysis by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, protein analysis by Kjeltec, mineral analysis by ICP-OES, fat by Mojonnier extraction technique, total solids determination, Iodide, chloride testing, choline determination, physical stability, and fatty acid profiles by Gas Chromatography. Conduct ingredient analysis including titrations, moisture testing, organoleptic testing, sediment testing, and peroxide. Perform ELISA and Romer allergen testing as required by plant sanitation and cleaning procedures. Conducts control sample analysis to determine validity of concurrent testing per method, water testing of minerals and volatile organic contaminants, Clean in place (CIP) Residual testing, testing of compressed gases for moisture and hydrocarbons, daily flavor and aroma of oils and weekly peroxide testing of oils, and completes any associated documentation and housekeeping responsibilities. Assist in compliance measures such as Laboratory Investigation Reports and assist FLLs in Non-conformance and RCA investigations. Adhere to all Abbott Nutrition Columbus plant Environmental, Health, and Safety measures which include monthly behavior-based safety observation. Strong ability to support instrument issues; must understand how to communicate active or potential issues. Must be able to assess day to day operations to meet schedule expectations and elevate issues/concerns. Strong ability to understand and communicate shift needs such as releases, potential corrections, and instrument issues with lab team members and across plant processing and filling line teams. Create training plans for new hires; delegate trainers as needed. Proficient and able to train new hires on all lab methods. Provide guidance on day-to-day operations for Chem I and Chem II as needed throughout shift. On shift liaison for FLL elevations when supervisor is not available. Proficient and able to train new hires on all lab methods. SHIFT 3rd shift; 11PM-7:30AM; Tue-Sat REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS High School diploma or equivalent, plus 1 year of appropriate college science related studies and 1 year of college mathematics (algebra, geometry, or calculus), or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Basic knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and requirements for infant formula and nutritionals. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, prepare simple reports, read and record gauge and display readings and use knowledge of chemistry acquired through formal education with moderate assistance from supervision. Mathematics knowledge to include: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, proportions, and basic keyboard skills; computer skills and statistical comprehension is desirable. Physical requirements for lifting and pushing 20-25 lbs. in addition to normal laboratory work. Ability to communicate well with other chemists, operators, and management with varying levels of education and experience. Ability to follow verbal instructions, recognize signs, follow written directions, prepare simple reports, read and record gauge and display readings and use their knowledge of chemistry acquired through formal education with moderate assistance from supervisor. Mathematics knowledge would include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, proportions, basic keyboard skills, and computer skills. Physical requirements for lifting and pushing 20-25 lbs. may be necessary in addition to normal laboratory work. This position requires a high level of flexibility, adaptability, and personal accountability due to the type and timing of the work involved. There is an expectation for a routine sample to have testing completed within eight hours. Able to recognize bottlenecks within the lab at a given shift and offers assistance to alleviate. Must have extensive awareness of the priorities of the lab, can predict when issues may arise, and actively works to minimize obstacles. Report directly to the Lab Supervisor/FLL and able to work with minimal supervision. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Science-related Bachelor's degree preferred, with 1 year of appropriate college lab studies and 1 year of college mathematics (algebra, geometry, or calculus). Minimum 3 years of laboratory experience at an Abbott Laboratories facility preferred.
