Are you a wizard with a mop and a master of meticulous maintenance? Are you ready to make a real impact while rocking an incredibly flexible schedule? The City of Aurora's Recreation Division is seeking a Custodial Maintenance Worker to maintain the cleanliness of two preschool facilities. Youll play a crucial role in maintaining the overall cleanliness and sanitation of the Summer Valley Center and Village Green Preschool. Heres the ultimate flexibility youve been looking for: were hiring for two distinct shifts, and you get to choose to work just one, or double down and rock both! Shift Option One: Monday through Thursday, two hours per day. You can pick either a morning or an afternoon slot. Shift Option Two: Monday through Thursday, one hour per day. Again, you have the choice between morning and afternoon. Imagine this for your ultimate flexible workweek: a one-hour morning shift at Summer Valley (6:45 AM - 7:45 AM) combined with a two-hour afternoon shift at Village Green (2:30 PM - 4:30 PM)! Please note, the City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-served basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. Hiring Salary is $17.00/hour. This position is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for the overall cleanliness and sanitation of interior and exterior of the Village Green Preschool Perform a variety of routine cleaning tasks of a multi-level/multi room building and understands occupational hazards and safety precautions General knowledge of custodial procedures, building systems, and the ability to perform minor repairs Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them Gather and empty trash Service, clean, and supply restrooms Clean and polish furniture and fixtures Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment Steam-clean or shampoo carpets Clear debris from grounds Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, using snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, to prevent damage to floors and fixtures Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings Storeroom upkeep and organization Maintenance and upkeep of equipment and supplies Basic record keeping methods, and ability to read directions, chemical labels, and work documents Take initiative to improve the building quality by meeting the needs and expectations of the Sumer Valley users and patrons, as well as the entire Summer Valley staff Provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors Concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions, perform a variety of tasks simultaneously or in rapid succession, and perform job responsibilities in a timely manner to meet scheduled deadlines Monitor building security and safety following set guidelines and procedures Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems Perform other duties as assigned This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education: Highschool Diploma or GED Experience: At least 1 year of experience working in custodial services. Preferred Qualifications: None Knowledge: Knowledge of building janitorial and maintenance practices Skills: Strong interpersonal and self-managerial skills Strong time management skills Strong customer service skills Basic computer skills required and the ability to use email Abilities: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management including executive staff, citizens, and elected officials knowledge of building maintenance, cleaning practices, and methods knowledge of various tools and equipment used to complete multiple duties knowledge of chemicals used for cleaning duties knowledge of safety procedures for equipment and chemicals including an understanding of SDS Ability to work independently and complete tasks to expectation with minimal supervision Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal or no supervision Ability to listen to all concerns and make proper adjustments Knowledge of and experience in sanitizing to meet Covid-19 safety standards Licenses and Certifications Required: None WORKING CONDITIONS Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical work; requires the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds without assistance Requires the ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds with assistance; lifting, carrying, walking, and standing Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment. Works primarily indoors but will work outdoors to complete all duties as assigned Equipment Used: Standard business and professional equipment and tools associated with the services being provided Use assigned power equipment and hand tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of facility The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
