This position will provide support to ongoing activities in the laboratories of the Vaccine and Immunotherapy Center on the 5th floor of the MGH East Research Center, 149 13th Street, Charlestown, MA. The research specialist will work with laboratory investigators and the VIC administrator under the direct supervision of the VIC Director to carry out assigned functions related to laboratory operations and research projects in the field of pre-clinical vaccine research and development. In addition to bench in vitro and in vivo animal model experiments as assigned, research activities may include statistical and computational analysis of data sets. Job Summary Performs a variety of administrative and scientific activities necessary to support the research and academic responsibilities of the Research Laboratory. Does this position require Patient Care? No Essential Functions: -Drafting experimental plans for studies to be conducted. -Conducting studies in vitro and in relevant animal models. -Conducting background research in the field of inquiry; developing and presenting background summaries and presentations as necessary. -Ordering and managing supplies and consumables for specific projects. -Supporting the drafting of scientific reports (for sponsored research) and journal articles for peer reviewed publications on the results of research at appropriate time points. -Responsible for preparing summaries of laboratory studies for meeting presentations and for publications. -Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using statistical techniques. -Attendance and participation in weekly laboratory meetings. -Developing and documenting new experimental methods as needed. No Licenses and Credentials Experience Experience in an academic or laboratory research setting 3-5 years required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Must be a problem solver willing to take the initiative and prioritize tasks, thereby ensuring the smooth and efficient conduct of several projects simultaneously. - Ability to perform a variety of highly specialized cell culture and molecular biology procedures. - A high degree of computer literacy in order to use various spreadsheet, database, accounting and word processing programs to assist in administrative, grant proposal preparation, and research reporting activities. - Excellent organizational skills in order to formulate, implement, and monitor a number of interrelated tasks. - Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment in handling of sensitive and confidential information. - Ability to work under deadline pressure and prioritize work from several sources. - Excellent interpersonal skills for internal and external communications.
