Department BSD E&E - Bettencourt Lab About the Department Founded in 1892, the Department of Ecology & Evolution at The University of Chicago is at the forefront of Ecological and Evolutionary Genomics. The Department of Ecology & Evolution (E&E) hosts diverse faculty and student interests in the ecological and evolutionary processes that underlie the patterns of life on earth. The research interests of our faculty include population genetics, molecular evolution, quantitative genetics, animal behavior, plant and animal ecology, evolutionary theory, systematic paleontology, and related subjects. A common theme in E&E is the application of quantitative techniques and current technologies to probe the conceptual foundations of ecology and evolution. Students and faculty in E&E interact broadly across campus with members of Statistics, the Geophysical Sciences, and other units within the Biological Sciences Division. E&E faculty are also members of the Committee on Evolutionary Biology, the Committee on Genetics, Genomics & Systems Biology, and the Committee on Development. Our ties with other Chicago area research institutions, including the Field Museum and Argonne National Lab, allow faculty and students to expand the scope of their research. Job Summary The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings. Responsibilities Assists in managing the research effort. Develops and solves mathematical models of ecology and evolution. Assists in planning, conducting, and analyzing data on life history evolution. Contributes to the preparation of high-quality journal articles and presents results at conferences and stakeholder events. Assists with the preparation of reports, manuscripts, and other documents. Provides technical and administrative support for a research project. May assist recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Is developing skills in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree). Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline, including but not limited to mathematics, physics, or mathematical biology. Experience: Analytic ability with mathematical theory in physics, math, and biology. Familiarity with solving differential equations. Creating compelling data visualizations of information and results, and using data science methods. Preferred Competencies Professional/academic level English language skills, both written and verbal. Excellent organizational and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail.
