Professional (+) (Fixed Term) Position Details: The Opportunity: The Brayton lab is seeking a laboratory assistant to aid in the execution of laboratory research and management of lab resources. The lab works on genomics, cell biology, diagnostics and vaccine development for Anaplsma spp. Work will include but is not limited to: DNA isolation, cloning and sequencing (including traditional Sanger sequencing and high throughput genomic sequencing), quantitative PCR, protein isolation and detection, RNAseq, and assistance with animal work (Gene gun immunization). Additionally routine laboratory maintenance and ordering duties will be required. Additional Information: This is a full-time (100% FTE), temporary position. This position is overtime eligible. Required Qualifications: A Bachelors degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Masters degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience. The required Bachelors degree must be in biology, microbiology, or a closely related field. Two years of the required work experience must have been performed in a laboratory. Ability to follow pre-established scientific procedures and/or protocols. Willingness to work with animals. Ability to successfully work in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to safely work with potentially infectious material in a safe manner. Be able to safely handle potentially toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances. Knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures, and the fundamental laboratory methods relating micro- and cell biology. Experience with eukaryotic cell culture. Knowledge of Bioinformatics; ability to use programs like SNAPgene, CLC Genomics workbench, online tools for DNA and protein analysis. Prior work experience performing standardized laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures; calculating and recording test results; maintaining a clean, sterile, and safe laboratory environment; keeping detailed inventory of materials and samples.
