Description of Work This posting is for a Transportation Worker III position for the Cumberland Roadside Environmental Unit. This position involves the safe and efficient operation of farm type tractors with attachments, including A-Boom/Long Arm Mowers; highly specialized landscape equipment including computer-controlled pesticide applicators, hydro seeders, and mulch blowers. The selected candidate will be expected to inspect contract mowing, trimming, litter removal, seeding and other landscape operations performed by others. The ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain and work in extreme weather conditions is needed. This position will be subject to emergency callbacks including snow and ice control, natural disasters, and other inclement weather. The candidate will be expected to complete other duties as assigned. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 $34,270 - $59,973 Management prefers applicants with the following: Knowledge of Vegetation Management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices. Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations. Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distribution, front end loader, dump truck, sod seeder, tractor w/sprayer attachment, brush chipper, conventional pesticide, hydro seeder). Experience obtaining information by observing, receiving from all relevant sources (contractors, co-workers). Experience in Snow and Ice removal operations. Additional Expectations: Position involves visual acuity, bending, walking and standing on uneven terrain, and the ability to safely and repeatedly lift and carry up to 80 lbs. Safety toe footwear will be needed. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employees will be subject to be outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
