HIRING RANGE: $89,485.01 - $99,427.79/year This job posting will remain open until filled and is subject to close at anytime. A Municipal Prosecutor acts as the Citys legal representative and prosecutes cases in Municipal Court. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Handles a full array of criminal cases including traffic, serious misdemeanors and domestic violence, code enforcement, animal control and sales tax. Reviews police reports to determine appropriate charges and disposition. Prepares for and conducts arraignments, pre-trial hearings and bench trials, jury trials and sentencings. Enters into plea negotiations with defendants or their attorneys during pretrial conferences. Provides legal guidance to Police Department and other City departments. Interprets laws, rulings and regulations. Interviews victims and witnesses of crimes. Prepares pleadings, undertakes discovery and drafts appeals. Performs other duties as assigned, including some clerical duties as needed. Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner. Requires regular and prompt attendance. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS Supervision Received Receives direct supervision from the Lead Municipal Prosecutor. Supervision Given None ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) Education Graduation from a recognized, accredited school of law or will graduate within six months. Licensure/Certification/Registration License to practice law in the State of Colorado or ability to within one-year of hire. Must have active attorney registration with the Colorado Supreme Court within one-year of hire. Experience Municipal Prosecutor I: Experience working in a legal environment preferred. Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to effectively prosecute violators of municipal ordinances. Ability to learn the principles and procedures of municipal, civil, and constitutional law. Ability to learn the principal methods, materials, and practices of legal research and investigation, as well as judicial procedure and Colorado Rules of Evidence. Ability to learn local ordinances, state and federal laws, and constitutional provisions affecting municipal operations. Ability to learn to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and legal precedents and to prepare, present and argue such material effectively in legal pleadings and before the courts. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, employees, court officials and the public. Ability to demonstrate reliability. Ability to transport oneself to off-site locations on an occasional basis. Lakewood application, a resume and cover letter are required. Ability to pass a background check. Must demonstrate regular and reliable attendance. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in an office setting and in the courtroom. Work may involve frequent interruptions and some interaction with individuals who may be upset, angry or frustrated. Position involves dealing with issues that may be highly sensitive. Requires communication with City officials, the public, courts, and other lawyers. Travel to meetings and to courts is frequently necessary. LIGHT WORK: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The city pays the cost of this coverage. Pension Our pension fund is a social security replacement, money purchase plan. Mandatory employee contribution is 11% of gross base salary; city contribution is 13% of gross base salary. Sick Leave Full-time employees earn 8 hours per month. Part-time employees earn 6 hours per month. Vacation Full-time employees with less than five years of service earn 8 hours per month. Part-time employees with less than five years of service earn 6 hours per month.
